The Assisted Reproduction Institute of Extremadura (IERA) was created to support individuals and couples like you on their path to parenthood with advanced reproductive medicine, personalized care, and a human approach.
IERA Lisboa opened in 2018 and is located within the Surgical Clinical Center (CCC). The clinic offers free parking and accessibility for patients with reduced mobility. To protect patient privacy, admission is reserved exclusively for IERA Lisboa patients. The clinic also has several waiting areas, helping create a calmer and more comfortable atmosphere before appointments and procedures.
Patients are seen in human reproduction consultation rooms and have access to a spacious recovery room with three beds separated by curtains, offering comfort and privacy after procedures. The clinic also includes an embryology office, embryo transfer room, operating room, embryology laboratory, andrology laboratory, cryopreservation room, sample collection room with multimedia equipment, and a patient care area.
In 2024, IERA carried out around 250 fertility treatment cycles, including approximately 150 IVF cycles with patients’ own eggs and 35 egg donation cycles. This smaller number of treatments gives the clinic a more personal and calm feel. IERA is not a large “factory-style” clinic where patients can feel like one of many. Instead, the medical team has more time to get to know each patient, look carefully at their situation, and explain the options clearly.
IERA Lisboa offers access to immunology, urology, and genetics consultations, ensuring care from a multidisciplinary team.
Every case is reviewed individually. The doctors consider the possible causes of infertility, the patient’s age, medical history, and any previous treatments before recommending the most suitable next steps. Patients also receive realistic information about their estimated chances of success, so they can make informed decisions with more clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.
IERA Lisboa Team
IVF at IERA Lisboa
IERA Lisboa offers IVF treatment with patients’ own eggs, with no waiting time to begin treatment. The clinic has experience in IVF with own eggs and provides detailed testing and diagnostics to better understand each patient’s fertility situation. This helps the medical team choose the most suitable treatment plan and improve the chances of success where possible.
For qualifying patients, ovarian PRP and endometrial PRP treatments are also available. These may be considered when the aim is to support ovarian function or improve the condition of the endometrium before IVF treatment.
For women with repeated implantation failure or repeated miscarriages, PGT-A may also be discussed. In Portugal, PGT-A is available for women aged 37 or older.

Egg Donation at IERA Lisboa
You should know that egg donors in Portugal are carefully selected according to legal and medical requirements. Donors must be between 18 and 34 years old, in good physical and mental health, and have no known history of genetic risk. Before being accepted as donors, they undergo a detailed assessment. This includes genetic risk evaluation, screening for infectious diseases, a general gynaecological examination, and a full hormonal study. These checks help the medical team confirm that donation is safe and appropriate.
At IERA, egg donors are matched manually, not by AI. The team considers your preferred phenotype and blood type, using available photos of both the patient and the donor to support the matching process. Patients may receive information such as the donor’s phenotype, blood type, age, and profession, if requested. There is no waiting time for egg donation treatment.
For sperm donation, patients can either ask IERA to select a suitable donor or choose a donor directly from partner cryobanks, such as CRYOS or European Sperm Bank. The donor must be approved by IERA before purchase. Patients can access the donor information available through the cryobank, except adult photos.
IERA Lisboa – International Patient Care
At IERA Lisboa each patient is guided by a patient care coordinator, who helps organise the treatment process and coordinates communication with the medical, nursing, and laboratory teams.
When you contact IERA Lisboa, you will be assisted by Leandro Coelho, a patient coordinator with 10 years of experience in international patient care. He helps coordinate your next steps and works closely with IERA’s ESHRE-certified nursing and laboratory team to provide clear answers, including to more technical questions. Contact is available every day from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
All necessary tests can be completed on-site at the clinic, including sperm analysis, blood tests, and ultrasound scans. For patients from the United Kingdom, who need to arrange tests in the UK, IERA also collaborates with Enhanced Fertility for testing. Genetic testing can be arranged using saliva kits shipped directly to the patient’s address.
The clinic is currently developing a partnership with a UK institution to further support patients from the United Kingdom. Due to Portuguese law, medication cannot be shipped directly to patients, but the clinic supports patients in understanding the available options for obtaining medication safely and legally.

Psychological Support Unit at EIRA Lisboa
IERA Lisboa offers psychological support for patients going through fertility treatment. The clinic understands that infertility can be emotionally difficult, so patients can ask for support at any stage of their journey. When needed, patients may also complete a simple questionnaire to help identify anxiety or emotional stress and decide whether a first psychology consultation would be helpful.
At Iera Quirónsalud, we know that every family is different and each requires a tailored solution.
“IERA Lisboa’s mission is to offer transparent, state-of-the art, closed‑budget fertility care. We make the latest technology available for all at no additional cost, like time‑lapse incubation and monitoring for every IVF cycle. Each department (Admission, Clinical, Nurse and Embryology teams) maintains a close and direct contact with the patients during the different phases of the treatment, caring for each patient with devotion. As a team, we embrace their journey, providing warmth, presence, and unwavering dedication. With science, empathy, hope and inclusiveness, we honour couples, women’s couples, single mothers, and families of every kind and from every location, nurturing trust and deep emotional safety throughout their path to parenthood.”
IERA Lisboa Google Reviews
I have had great experiences at IERA. I most often see Dr Eduardo and nurse Ana Sofia. It is truly a pleasure to work with them both. They are kind, compassionate, supportive, and just generally nice people to be around. I never thought I’d say this about a fertility clinic – but I actually look forward to my appointments!
Dr Eduardo is very knowledgeable, and communicates information clearly and directly. He seems to genuinely care very much about his patients. Nurse Ana Sofia is a wonderful supplement – she is warmhearted, easy-going, and thorough in her work. The two together take a stressful situation and create a warm, calm, laidback environment while providing quality care.

We had a really beautiful and positive experience at IERA clinic. The whole team, from reception to nurses, embryologists and doctors avec very human, kind and empathetic. They carefully listen to your needs and make the process as good at it can be. We want to thank the nurses Sofia and Telma for their very gentle care and positive spirit, the embryologist Dr Mafalda for her kindness and very clear explanations, Ana for always welcoming us with a smile at the reception desk and helping out on the phone, and finally to Dr Ana and her assistant Susana for thinking along with us and keeping the spirit up!

For us, IERA is one of the best fertility clinics in Portugal. I have endometriosis and for 4 years I underwent treatments to get pregnant, an unsuccessful IVF… the despair and the desire to give up were there…
Last year we sought help at this clinic and began to be followed by Dr Ana Aguiar who, in our opinion, is an excellent 5-star doctor, an incredible woman, always available, she helped us deal with fears and anxieties throughout the process… along with her assistant. Excellent high-level nursing team, always with a smile and comfort for us.
In November, the positive result finally arrived and we are almost parents, we were successful right from the first IVF treatment. It was the best choice we made in having me followed at IERA, I have no words to thank them. I advise anyone who wants to start treatments to go to this clinic. Thank you so much 🥰🙏

Clinic has provided the Statement of Truth
We really care about the quality of the information presented on our website.
To make sure that all data provided by clinics is correct - we ask clinics to confirm all data by
"Statement of Truth". The document is signed off by clinic's representatives, scanned and
attached below.
Fresh donor oocytes were used for fertilization with donor or partner's sperm.
Frozen donor eggs Donor oocytes from egg bank were thawed before fertilization with donor or partner's sperm.
Note: As statistics shown in various sources (ESHRE, SART) on average the value of success rate when using frozen eggs may be 10% lower than with fresh eggs.
Embryo transfer day and number of embryos
Embryo transfer day Many clinics prefer to transfer embryos on day 5 at the blastocyst stage as it may lead to better outcomes of an IVF program.
Number of embryos to transfer International and national medical organizations including ASRM, SART and ESHRE discourage the transfer of a large number of embryos because of the increased likelihood of multiple-fetus pregnancies. Multiple-fetus pregnancies, in turn, increase the probability of premature births and related health problems.
Worth to know:
We encourage IVF Clinics to present success rates per cycle rather than per patient. We also ask clinics not to include any frozen embryo transfers in success rates calculation.
Please bear in mind that including frozen embryo transfers (FET) in statistics may increase the overall value of success rates - however at the same time it will increase the cost of the IVF treatment. IVF Clinics usually do not include frozen embryo transfer costs in their programs. That means that if you have any embryos left - the treatment will cost you more than advertised by the clinic.
IVF Success Rates
The way IVF success rates are calculated may vary from clinic to clinic. Calculating and presenting success rates by clinics is a common "communication" issue as clinics try to advertise the best values on their websites.
IVF success rates are usually calculated as a percentage of clinical pregnancies dividing the number of favorable results such as number clinical pregnancies by the number of procedures performed such as a number of embryo transfers, according to the following formula:
"number of pregnancies or number of live births / number of embryo transfers"
You should be aware that the success of IVF treatment is the sum of different factors and circumstances, only few of which depend on the clinic itself. The latter are surely the experience and professionalism of the medical staff as well as offered IVF treatments that allow particular types of patients (with either lower or higher chances of a successful pregnancy).
However, in majority of cases it is your individual situation, condition and medical history that influence the result of the treatment. Your age, genetic factors or various reasons for infertility play a crucial role in determining the IVF success.
Contact in person the clinics you’re interested in and discuss your own perspectives on IVF success instead of studying success rates advertised on clinic's websites.
If you'd like to now more about egg donation success rates please refer to this article:
Here you'll find basic information about the program and the sum of additional costs that are required to carry out the treatment.
The "Additional costs" mean that there are additional costs to cover on top of the advertised program price. You may find these costs in the "Included in program and additional costs" tab below.
Popup - Basic guarantees:
Guarantees refer to number of donor eggs (oocytes) included in the program, number of embryos which are guaranteed on day 3 or day 5 at the blastocyst stage.
Important:
When the clinic offers an embryo guarantee, the basic requirement is good quality partner’s sperm. Usually IVF clinics use WHO standards to assess the sperm parameters. If this is the case, make sure you ask the clinic which particular standards are being applied and what parameters are taken into account. Some fertility clinics apply their own standards. Make sure you ask what happens, if despite good sperm parameters, you will not receive the guaranteed number of embryos.
What does it mean?
Here you will find all the options that are included in the program and those that are necessary to carry out the IVF program but at an additional cost.
All procedures/services which are not included have additional costs that you will have to cover apart from the costs of the Program.
What does it mean?
Other procedures and services that are possible to perform at the Clinic at additional cost.
Remember the decision to use medical services should be made after consulting your doctor.
Refund based on outcome
IVF Refund Program is a term used for financial IVF programs. They give the patient access to two or three IVF cycles for one payment. Usually fresh embryo transfers and extra frozen embryo transfers are included in the price.
A multi-cycle IVF refund program means that the treatment continues until the desired result. It may refer to either clinical pregnancy or a live birth – or until all of the program’s cycles are completed. If the IVF program ends successfully, the clinic will not return your money. However, if you don’t achieve your goal, you can count on a partial or full refund of the costs.
