Many international patients from different countries are considering undergoing high quality and successful infertility treatments at overseas infertility clinics and fulfilling their dreams of having a baby. The vast majority of them are patients who travel overseas to undergo IVF or IVF with donor eggs. Below you will find information you should take into consideration when choosing the destination and an overseas clinic to undergo infertility treatments.
Why patients go for IVF donor egg abroad?
- The national law restricts access to egg donors and egg donor programs
- Types of egg donor arrangements. Many patients search for IVF abroad clinics because of non-anonymous egg donation in their home country
- The unaffordable costs of IVF, IVF ICSI or IVF with donor eggs
- Better treatment quality and IVF success rates abroad
Professional IVF centres from various countries offer infertility treatments for international patients. Below you can find a list of the most popular destinations which allow for IVF treatment using eggs from an anonymous donor.
IVF and donor eggs abroad – which country shall I choose?
Countries with the greatest number of egg donor programs and which are the most popular destinations according to international patients:
Should I be aware of treatment quality and customer service level abroad?
No, not at all. Treatment quality and customer service are in most IVF clinics in the popular locations on a very high level. Patients from abroad often constitute up to 50% of all patients. Clinics in some countries offer many additional services – e.g. pick up from the airport, online consultations, emergency contact for patients to make the overall treatment process as easy as possible.
The choice of the destination depends mostly on personal preference. Legal restrictions on donor egg use, donor matching processes and the cost of egg donor IVF as it vary from country to country. So what should you pay attention to?
The possibility to choose an egg donor
In most countries (e.g. Poland, Greece, the Czech Rep or Spain) the selection of egg donors is based on a phenotype match with the recipient. This means a donor needs to have eye, hair and skin colour that matches yours. These rules stem from legal requirements. This also means that in these countries patients will not be able to select “any donor”. In other countries (e.g. in Ukraine), a patient can choose a donor who looks similar to the recipient. However, departures from this rule are also possible.
According to international medical associations (ESHRE, ASRM), selecting an egg donor who shares some characteristics with a recipient (at least the colour of hair, eyes and skin, height and a blood type) is recommended.
Information shared with the recipient about the egg donor
Various clinics grant access to different amounts and types of information about an egg donor. For some patients, this may be an important factor affecting their choice of destination or an overseas IVF clinic. For example, in Ukraine, Russia and the United States, in addition to donor’s standard features such as height, weight, and hair colour, international patients will get additional information including the donor’s adult/childhood photos and others.
The donor’s race
In Ukraine, Russia and Poland IVF clinic databases are dominated by egg donors of Caucasian origin (you might check out a database of egg donors here). If you are looking for a donor with darker skin, your natural choice would be IVF centres from Spain, Cyprus or Greece. African-American, or Afro-Caribbean donors are most often available in the USA or Barbados.
The number of guaranteed eggs which you will receive from the donor
The number of eggs received from a donor varies from a clinic to clinic. It is a generally accepted practice that you should receive 6 eggs, resulting in 2 embryos, on condition that your partner’s sperm parameters are satisfactory. Some overseas IVF clinics offer all donor eggs no matter how many eggs have been retrieved (so-called exclusive donor).
Please bear in mind, however, that it is not the number of donor eggs, but their quality that matters in determining how successful the egg donation program would be.
IVF abroad with frozen eggs
Before you visit a clinic abroad, check out whether IVF centre uses frozen or fresh eggs. In the case of frozen eggs, most overseas IVF clinics offer 6-10 oocytes. Crucially, this number usually refers to frozen cells – such cells need to be thawed first. Statistically, approximately 50-70% cells are successfully thawed, and this means that the number of oocytes intended for fertilisation will be smaller.
Your age – the maximum age of an egg recipient
In most countries, the law limits the maximum age for IVF (for recipients) to 45 or 50. For egg recipients who are 50 and older, there are very few available destinations: Ukraine, Russia (in Europe) and the USA.
Do you have a partner? Or perhaps you are planning on becoming a single parent?
If you have a husband or a partner, the egg donor program is open to you in any country of your choice. However, if you are single, the list of overseas clinics that offer IVF or IVF with donor eggs is narrowed down to:

Estonia, country of choice for many Scandinavians and Baltic region residents for IVF abroad, should be added to the list of popular destinations for IVF in Europe. If you are puzzled with the reason of popularity of it, you should know that there are many egg donors avialable and the clinics’ high standards speak up for themselves. Quality of the treatments has their price and you are looking at 3000 Euro charge for treatment with own cells and between 5000 to 6000 Euro with donated ones.
The other destination worth to consider is Mexico. On previous comparison, our focus was on European countries and we rule out other destinations. We understood, after receiving many queries and in the same time many positive reviews from our US based patients that this is worth to consider and to follow with more detailed investigation. Why anybody would choose Mexico for the treatment? The main reason is logistic – it is simply more convenient to fly to Mexico rather than Europe.
What is there in Mexico that makes it atractive destination?
Patients who provided us with feedback focused their attention on customer service and professional level of treatment offered by clinics.
Given the price being 50 to 60% lower on average in any US clinic and no challenges in finding donors plus the law which doesn’t set any boundaries on matching recipient with donor, flexibility with IVF procedures – makes it overall very attractive destination. The main reason is logistic – is is simply more convenient to fly to Mexico rather than Europe. Read more in our article “Why USA patients travel to Mexico for IVF and egg donation treatment?”
Patients base their research for the clinic by popularity of one destination in their home country or/and the cost of the treatment. Is that entirely correct way of making decision? Given our experience, we really doubt that and would like to stress importance of other factors.
In Europe, there are clinics which specialize in some fields of the IVF therapy like treatment of the patients over 40 or over 50. Other focus on patients who have already had number of failed IVF cycles for different reasons. Some are giving importance to genetic screening or other aspects of the therapy.
If you have doubts how to choose clinic, we strongly recommend to contact our consultants who can answer your questions and guide you towards right place for the treatment.
